This website has served us very well over the years, attracting more than 50,000 visits; helping us keep in touch with you all; and acting as a tool for all kinds of communication. In doing such a good job however, it has become perhaps a little too big, too cluttered and too much of an archive for the needs of our busy school community. So if you're wanting to catch up with Low Mill 2014, check the diary, or just see what we're all about, please redirect your browser to our NEW WEBSITE! Please bear in mind that the new site is in it's infancy and lots will be added in the next few weeks. The new site will soon take the place of this site, although we will keep this one as an archive so you can check back when you feel like a trip down memory lane. Our new website - Low Mill III - Getting Tired....Another day, another dunking! Breakfast was cereal, waffles, tomato, sausage, bacon and poached egg. Archery, canoeing, bushcraft, abseiling were the daytime activities. Chicken cobbler with vegetables and rice pudding for tea. A village quiz and packing before bed. The children have been a delight to be with all week. True superstars. See you tomorrow, folks. Zzzzzzz. Dear mum and dad I hope you are okay love from Brooklyn Low Mill III - Highs and Lows! After a hearty breakfast of cereal, fried eggs, bacon, potato smiles and toast, the group split into two. One section climbed the heady heights of Pen-y-Ghent (694m above sea level) whilst the other group climbed the wall before being plunged deep underground! We enjoyed a roast beef dinner and strawberry mousse after which we enjoyed the egg challenge. Using limited materials we designed and made a device to (hopefully) protect an egg from a fall. We are so proud of our children who are incredibly brave and adventurous. Tomorrow we will be swapping activities. Bring it on!
Low Mill III - This Time It's Windier!Day One - A great journey (only two sick bags filled) found a good chunk of Year Six arrive safely at Low Mill. After the annual wrestle with duvet covers, lunch was eaten. Massive thanks for the Low Mill team for rustling up lunches for the four who forgot theirs! We split into our groups: abseiling, bushcraft and archery for a fun-packed afternoon. Fish, chips and peas, followed by treacle sponge and custard warmed us up before our spooky night walk. Tiredness and a competitive streak meant that all children were desperate to get to sleep after drinking their hot chocolate! Mountain climbing, caving and rock climbing await us tomorrow!
Treasure Island!Year 6 present : Treasure Island. All the children in Year 6 went in search of treasure during their last week at junior school. There were pirates and parrots: murderous, scallywags and mad marooned sailors. Luckily, there was also young Jim Hawkins to save the day and the treasure. The children produces a splendid performance of this classic tale and their enthusiasm was wonderful to watch. Their acting was brilliant, the narrators were word perfect and the songs were sung with such gusto that everyone in the audiences was tempted to join in. They really did themselves proud. Well done to each and everyone. Please check out the photographs below. Teacher Training DayDon't forget, school is closed on Monday 2nd June for Teacher Training. Sport ReliefWell done to everyone - children, staff, mums and dads, friends and family - who joined in our Sport Relief event this year. We walked from school, to Filey beach, to Hunmanby Gap, and all the way back again! Some stiff legs and a few blisters were had along the way but we had a brilliant day and as always the children were fantastic. Big thank you to Mr Wales and the Filey Coastguard who escorted along the way. Check back soon to see the total we managed to raise. A Bit of a DramaWell done to all of our young actors who performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre this week! Both our Year 3 & 4 and the Year 5 & 6 drama groups made their debut performances at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, performing to a packed house of paying guests. Needless to say, they parformed brilliantly. Big thanks to Mrs Clarke and Mrs Hedge for supporting the group! MSA RequiredWe are currently looking to appoint new Midday Supervisory Assistants. The MSA role has come a long way in recent times, and the successful candidates will be given training and supervision in providing lunchtime clubs and activities for our children. This is a demanding post, but one which we are sure will be very rewarding.
As with all of our posts, candidates will be subject to enhanced CRB checks.
Please see the Vacancies section of the website (use the menu on the left) to download an application pack. Marvellously Murderous MathsA group of Y6 children (and Mr Grice) were treated to a fantastic morning courtesy of Filey School where we were entertained by Murderous Maths author Kjartan Poskitt. He amazed us with tricks, jokes and maths magic before personally signing Murderous Maths books for our pupils. Kjartan reminded us how magical and mind-blowing numbers can be. Thanks so much to him and Mrs Mallender of Filey School for such a treat (including a gorgeous lunch!) Visit Kjartan Poskitt's website here: http://www.murderousmaths.co.uk/ As well as the Murderous Maths books he also writes fiction including his Agatha Parrot series. Highly recommended!!! Bible GiftsThanks to the charity Bibles for Schools and to the Freemasons in Filey, every child in our school received their very own Bible today. The Bibles will stay with the children as they move through school and then be given as a gift as they leave school at the end of Year 6. We were joined by members of the Freemasons and by members of the clergy from the Filey Parish for a presentation of the Bible. We are sure the children will enjoy them for many years to come. News From London!Monday 13:00 - Our brave Year 4 travellers have arrived in London following a relatively quiet train journey. They are now making their way to the London Eye! Tuesday 09:00 - Off to the Science Museum! Tuesday 10:00 - School receives an email message from a passenger on the train to London yesterday: "I was travelling to London yesterday, with important preparation to do on the train. So imagine my 'horror' to see the train compartment fill with the bright red shirts of your pupils heading off for their London trip. Well , I was mistaken in rushing to judgement - their behaviour was impeccable and a credit to the school! Congratulations to all those involved" Tuesday 13:00 - King's Cross waiting for the train home :( Tuesday 18:00 - All home, safe and sound and rather tired.
Head Lice Ain't Nice!Well done to everyone who took part in the Beat the Bug Challenge! Thanks to your efforts and to the Friends of Filey Juniors for donating the fine toothed combs, Filey is a little more head lice free. And we had some excellent pictures of extreme wet combing too! Even the teachers got involved! Each of our winner received a big egg! An Easter egg that is, not a nasty nit! Internet SafetyToday is Internet Safety Day and your children will be doing a number activities throughout the week to promote online safety and security. Please help support us in ensuring your chidren are safe whilst online by following these tips:
Banish bullying With increasing incidents of cyber bullying, parents need to be more vigilant about monitoring their children's internet activity, ensuring that they only use moderated chat rooms and that the parental control software is on at all times. To protect your children against cyber bullies and ensure that they do not become perpetrators themselves, make sure that you communicate the following rules of online behaviour to them:
Wes and the WritersWe had a very special guest in school this week: author and poet Wes Magee came to visit, along with children from our cluster of schools (Hunmanby, Staxton and Sherburn). They spent the day writing poems and putting together their very own books. A great day for everyone. Message from Wes: "A brief email to yourself & John to say “very many thanks” for setting-up such a first-class day for me at Filey Juniors. The able writers were excellent & worked diligently throughout the day. Good stuff! Best wishes to all...................Wes (Magee)" AttendanceSchool attenendance has a dramatic effect on children's education. Please download the letter below to keep in touch with all of the good work going on in school and read some IMPORTANT INFORMATION regarding holidays in term time. MovemberWe were all a little surprised when our male staff turned up for work sporting 1970's style moustaches during November 2012. We were even more surprised however, when the children did the same! Movember was the occasion of course and we'd all decided to look just a little bit silly to help support men's cancer charities. We raised well over £100 just in school donations and even more when we counted support from our friends and families. Well done everyone, especially Mr Grice who organised and led the way in fund raising. Time for a shave now! French Christmas Anyone?Lots of our children have been coming to the French Club which runs in school. As part of the run up to Christmas they are practicing a French carol. Click the link below to download the song and practice at home. You can also have a go at a French Advent Calendar by clicking this link: http://www.jeannedelalune.co.uk/advent/Advent_Calendar_French.html
A Fond Farewell to Filey JuniorsJust a quick note to inform parents and children that I will be leaving the School at the end of this term. It has been a pleasure to teach the children of Filey over the past 20 years. I will take many fond memories of Filey Juniors with me to my new full time teaching position. I consider myself very fortunate to have had so many happy years at Filey Juniors and would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff, parents and children both past and present, for their support and friendship over the years. As the teacher who's usually behind the camera, the above picture is one drawn by a pupil in one of the first classes I taught at Filey - it's still the best picture I've ever seen of me! Mrs Booth (nee Miss Daffern) MovemberYou may have noticed a sudden trend amongst our male staff to grow some rather suspicious facial hair. I have noticed one or two of our parents joining in too. It is of course Movember and we have taken to growing moustaches to raise awareness of prostate cancer and to raise money for this cause. If you, or you children, would like to sponsor us, we would be delighted to hear from you! Please complete the form on the reverse of the recent newsletter with any donations or use this link to sponsor us online: Hopefully, we will have a group photo on the website at the end of the month where you will be able to judge out efforts. Low Mill 2012Our annual residential trip has been booked for months and we've had our case packed and ready for the big event. Why not check on our progress as we jump off viaducts, jump in rivers, canoe, cave, and climb the odd mountain. We even get to wash up and make our own beds! Please see the 'Residential Trips' section to keep up with our adventures. Be InspiredOur girl's football team were lucky enough to make the long journey from Filey to Newcastle to see the Ladies Olympic Football at St. James' Park. Canada vs Sweden proved to be an excellent game and our girls were awarded the loudest supporters in the stadium trophy (well not really, but they would have if there was one!). Who knows, one day we may see some of our girls representing their country in a similar game. Olympic Football FunMorgan Richardson was the lucky winner of the Olympic tickets that the school received for the Men's Football. Here are some photos that were taken to mark the occasion. The Girls' Football team were awarded some tickets to see the Ladies' Football. Photos to follow... A Royal CelebrationOur school uniform has turned red, white and blue and we've been invaded by royalty! A street party, music from the 50's, party games and cucumber sandwiches were all part of our Diamond Jubilee celebrtaions. And thanks to the Friends of Filey Junior School, every child received a jubilee medal! What a great day! Happy EasterWe've really enjoyed our Easter celebrations at Filey Methodist Church this week. From Roman songs, to Easter poems; Viking longboats to expressive dance; recorder players to poetry writers; we've all had something good to share with our community and each other. And our Easter bonnets and Easter egg competitions produced some wonderful work. Well done everybody" Have a Happy Easter! Sewing ClubSewing Club has had a very successful term with Year 5 children. Our super, smiley sewers and our sunshine sewers have enjoyed making love hearts, cushions and Easter chicks and bunnies. Watch out next term for some brilliant, colourful ideas. And a big thank you to Mrs Price and Mrs Birkin for all their help and support - they've had us in stitches!!! Girls Bring Home The SilverwareOur girls did a wonderful job this week, playing some wonderful football and really pulling together as a team. They won games; they lost games; they drew games; but most importantly, they impressed everyone with their team spirit and fair play. So much so in fact, they were awarded the 'Respect Cup' as recognition of their excellent attitude. Well done girls! Keep up the excellent work! And They're Off!As part of this year's Comic Relief activities the whole school (and lots of mums, dads and friends) pull on their shorts and trainers to run a mile! It was such a lovely day, where better to run than Filey beach? Well done everyone on a very energetic and fun event which helped raise money for a good cause. A 'Treemendous' Effort!Year 6 Art Club prepared a set of decorations to garnish the school tree entry in the St John's church Christmas tree festival this year and class 8 made a beautiful set of 'Mini Maths Tree' decorations that believe it or not were covered in sums! The tree was kindly loaned by Class 1 - thank you class 1 - and the theme for the art club decorations was appropriately enough Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Owain and Kerry-Ann helped set up and decorate the tree and I think you will agree, it looked treeriffic. We're SO Fit and HealthyIt's a wonderful achievement to have 100% attendance at school, and this term over 75 children (and quite a few staff) managed just that! 75 children is approximately 30% of our school which shows just how well our children and families are doing at improving attendance. Well done to all the 100% Club - let's see how many of you can achieve the Silver Award next term. And remember, you can still win a Bronze next term, even if you didn't manage it this time around. Prize GivingWe had some very special VIP guests in school this week as Mr Whales and the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Filey came to school to announce the winners of our Christmas Nativity Competition! Mr Wales had organised the event as part of the Filey Rotary Club's annual Grotto. All the children did an excellent job and impressed all the judges and visitors to the Grotto. Christmas Fair!As it was the 1st of December, it was time to start thinking about Christmas, and what better way than with a Christmas Fair? Parents, children, friends, staff and of course Father Christmas all turned up for an evening of carols, mince pies and good cheer. A wide range of gifts, crafts, food and games were on offer and our Carol Singers, led by Mrs Lawson, entertained and helped bring the Christmas feeling to everyone. A lovely evening which really helped to bring that Christmas feeling to everyone. Thanks to everyone involved, especially the FoFs who organised the event. The BIG DrawWhat an arty day we've had! The BIG Draw came to Filey thanks to our friendly artist Mary and the Coast and Country team. Every child, member of staff and quite a few parents had a go at creating our most ambitious piece of art yet! The finished canvases will now be on display in school and on the playground (when the weather gets a bit better). We'll post another picture when they are installed. Well done everyone on a great BIG Draw. Children In NeedIf there's one thing our children aren't in need of, it's buns! Thanks to our Children In Need bun and cake sale we've raised over £150 to help children less fortunate than ourselves. A massive thank you to everyone who donated to this event, and the children looked wonderful in their 'Spotty Dress'. Bernard the PoetOur good friend Bernard visited school this week to deliver a very important road safety message through the use of poetry. All of our children had the opportunity to listen, create and perform poetry with a road safety message. A fun day, with a very serious message - well done everyone and thankyou Bernard and Mr Santon for your time and effort. You may catch some of the work and an important message from Mr Santon on Yorkshire Coast Radio later in the month. Shoebox SuccessA huge thank you to all of you who contributed gifts for our Christmas Shoebox Appeal. We managed to send 50 full boxes as part of Filey's collection which will be sent to Belarus and Kiev. Thanks to your generosity there will be many happy children on Christmas Day who otherwise would have had no presents. Year 6 ResidentialCheck the 2011 Y6 Residential link for all the latest news from Caythorpe. Spooky-Doo Two! Halloween Disco. What a fantastic night we had when the ghost, ghouls, goblins and witches all came to our school disco! Following the success of last year's event, it was time for Spooky-Doo Two, and this year it was even bigger and better. Thanks as always to our DJ's - Adam and Mark, and to all the Friends of Filey Junior School for all their hard work.
Grub's Up!Just look at those leeks and carrots! Our gardening club have been harvesting their carefully tended crops, and despite the cold weather and the dark nights, our talented horticulturalists have harvested a bumper crop. Well done to the green fingered children and to Mrs Bosomworth for making our gardens such a success. Harvest FestivalA BIG thank you to everyone who donated and supported our Harvest Festivals this year. This is the first year we've held a Harvest Festival in quite a long time and it was very well received by both parents and children alike. Our friends at Filey Methodist Church have been very accomodating and we look forward to many more events in the future. The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough have been very greatful for all the wonderful donations given as part of our Harvest. I know the produce will have been enjoyed by those who find themselves in difficult circumstances. Thank you for your generosity. School Dinners Get a Make-OverAs part of the improvements to school dinners, we have asked the children to suggest a new name and logo for our ‘canteen’. There were a wide range of ideas and many of these could have easily been chosen. In the end however, our judges picked three entries which were all very similar. The name and logo for our dining hall will be an amalgamation of the three winning entries – Sunshine Canteen (Oliver T); Sunrise Café (Jacob B); Junior Diner (Paige B). I am therefore proud to reveal, school dinners will now be served in the…“Sunrise Diner”. Voucher CollectionPlease look out for the pound note tokens printed in the Scarborough Evening News between now and 22nd October. If we collect the most (based on average number per pupil) we could win £3000! And Don't forget the Morrisons vouchers for schools. Please ask your family / friends / neighbours to help collect these as they have provided some excellent resources for gardening and cookery in the past. Parent and Pupil - Zumbatomic TimeWe are now offering a weekly parent and child Zumba session every Wednesday evening (starting 28th September) from 3:30pm until 4:30pm. If you and your child would like to attend, please call in to school. Please note, at the moment the sessions will only be available to one parent / carer and a child from our school, attending and joining in together. Unfortunately, we can not allow younger children to attend. If there are enough places, available at a later date we will look to open this up to other adults and children. No prior knowledge or experience of Zumba is required for these sessions as our tutor, Zoe, will teach all the moves as part of the session. There is no charge for this club. Girls' Football Has Kicked OffSeason 2011 - 2012 of the Friday night Girls' Football club has just kicked off. Our new Year 3 children are very enthusiastic and we've had a record turn out for the openning of the new season. Will they be able to match last year's winning teams? Don't forget, boots and shin pads are essential! Take a look at last year's video highlights... Drum Club: SambaFollowing a very succedful first year, in which our very own Drum Club made several public performance and recorded their first CD (Drum & Drummer - see the Filey Juniors PLC link), we proudly present the very first Drum Club promo video. Recorded on location in the school hall, the video took almost 30 minutes to shoot and cost over one pound in Wham bars! Look out for Drum Club v2 coming soon. Sing Up!Below is a link to the song words PowerPoint so that you can learn the words for the Y5/6 Leavers' Assembly. Please try to bring your old photographs into school at the start of next week, Y6! Homework ClubHomework club will be starting again from February 7th. The clubs are held in the computer suite and are an ideal opportunity for your child to complete homework tasks. They have use of computers and this is ideal for them to access websites such as Mathletics.co.uk. The school has purchased full access to this site as we think that it is very good for enhancing mathematical skills and understanding. We are aware that some children do not have reliable internet access at home and we would especially encourage those children to attend the clubs. Also it is often the case that home computers are very much in demand by other family members and we would like to ensure that computer based homework can be accessed by all the children. However we have found that children are happy to bring a variety of homework tasks to complete at the clubs. Presently the club is for Years 5 and 6 children but could possibly be open to Year 4 children if they have not got access to a computer at home. Please contact the school if you wish your Y4 child to attend.
What a performance! It's behind you! Our school has been invaded by a host of pantomime characters form a variety of stories. Cinderella and her sisters, Alladin, the 7 Dwarves, Jack and a Giant have all been playing a part in our Pantomime! All the Year 5 & 6 children have been busy learning their lines and the songs for what has been a fantastic performance. Well done to everyone involved! Get CookingThere have been some delicious smells coming from the school kitchens recently, and it's not just at lunchtimes! After school the kitchen is taken over by our very own Master Chefs! Or Mrs Taylors Cookery Club as it's otherwise known. This week it was pasta on the menu, but each week it's something new and exciting. Thanks to Mrs Taylor and all the parents who come to help out. Now where's my dinner? It's not too late to pick up a calendarHave you seen the Filey Junior School PLC (Pupil Led Company) calendar? These special calendars were produced using artwork from everyone involved witht the school and can be your for just £3 (two for £5). As well as the original artwork, the calendar features important school dates for 2011. Please see a member of Class 9, or the school office, to purchase one! MATHLETICSSince Christmas, an internet resource, MATHLETICS, has been available for your children to use at home and school. It is proving to be very popular and children are improving their mathematics skills as a result. Some children have told me that they are experiencing difficulties getting it to work at home. Below is a link to a technical guide to (hopefully) solve any problems. Please get in touch with school if we can help further. Please encourage your child to use this resource. Ned Finds ChristmasIt was a special afternoon when our Year 3 & 4 children performed Ned The Donkey to a packed house of parents and friends. All the children were involved with the production which saw Ned look for the real meaning of Christmas, visiting toy shops, kitchens and even meeting Santa along the way. Finally Ned found christmas in a stable and sent everyone home with a smile on their faces and a warm, Christmas feeling. Spooky Doo! Where are you?Strange goings on in the school hall! We've been invaded by a range of vampires, ghosts, witches and monsters. The good news is, they're all very friendly and enjoy a good boogie! Which is just as well as this was our Spooky Doo Halloween Disco! Thanks to all the FoFs and the staff who made this such a fun night, and a special thank you to Mark and Adam for DJing all evening. Children came to school dressed as their favourite animal and had the opportunity to do a variety of animal themed activities throughout the day. There was even 'dog biscuits' available at the tuck shop! In total we raised over £120 for our third charity of the year - Dogs Trust. A Bumper CropIt's been a great year fo strawberries and potatoes this year! We've had super size strawberries and pots of potatoes thanks to our resident gardening experts. But that's not all! Cabbages, lettuce, onions, leeks and carrots are still bursting out from the allotment areas around school. We'll soon be self sufficient at this rate! All The Fun Of The (Summer) FairWhat a way to mark the beginning of July - our Summer Fair! From dancing to fire engines, welly wanging to retro arcades, there was something for everyone at this year's Summer Fair. All the children played their part in organising and running the stalls at the fair. Staff were fantastic organising the events. The FoF Juniors were great at getting everything moving and ensuring the day went smoothly. Well done everyone and a massive £1200 raised towards play equipment for the children. Filey Town Festival - ChoirFollowing the success of the dancers, our school choir took their turn to entertain the crowds. Singing a range of songs that included well known hits from musicals past and present, the choir couldn't fail to impress. In a performance which lasted almost an hour and included many solos, Mrs Lawson led the children to a wonderful performance. Well done children and thank you Mrs Lawson. Sports DayWho needs the World Cup or the Olympic Games when you can catch some real sporting talent at the Filey Junior School Sports Day? Everyone enjoyed the performances and joined in with the singing and dancing! A Great Night OutThe first ever Filey Junior School Barn Dance was a great success! Thanks to the FoF Juniors, parents, children and friends were able to dance the night away with live music provided by the Pied Piper Band. Everyone enjoyed the Pie and Pea supper cooked by Mrs Colling and Mrs Cusick. If only we all knew our left from our right, we may have even danced in time! The End Of The SeasonOur Y5 / Y6 girls football team have been very busy recently. Having reached the semi-final of the Scarborough & District Cup, they faced Scarborough College. After a very busy and hard fought game, neither side could find the goal and the game went to extra time. Unfortunately, Scarborough College were just too strong and managed to grab a goal in the second period of extra time. Good luck to them in the final! With only a few days rest, the girls then went to Barrowcliffe to play in the league ladder. Having just been promoted to the Premiership, the girls were facing some tough opposition. Despite this being their first time in the league, the girls managed a win against Friarage, but lost games to Gladstone Road, Hunmanby and Barrowcliffe. A disappointing end result, but everyone enjoyed the experience and considering this is the girl's first season, they've done incredibly well. We're very proud of how well they've played and their strong team spirit and sportsmanship. We're all looking forward to next season now and we are also looking to secure a sponsor for our new kit. If you, or someone you know, owns a business and would like the opportunity for some publicity, please contact us at school. A full kit is around £300, but this could be split amongst sponsors. Next up, it's the Year 3 & 4 girls. Barn DanceTickets are now on sale for the first ever Filey Junior School Barn Dance priced at £6.50 for adults and £3.50 for children. The evening will include live music from the Pied Piper Band and a pie & pea supper. What better way to celebrate the end of SATs week? See the FoF Juniors section for more details. A Very Active School![]() Walking around school today, you would have been forgiven for thinking you had walked in to a sports and physical activity centre. It seemed like everyone was running, jumping, cycling, throwing or dancing. From Freddy Fit to Cycling Proficiency to Tag Rugby, everyone (including the teachers) was getting healthy and doing some exercise. And that was just the morning! Match of the DayOur Girl's football team were in action last night (22nd April) playing Newby Primary School in the quarter finals of the Scarborough District Cup. An early goal for our team made for a great start and the girls defended well to ensure they went in to half-time with a one goal lead. In the second half it was Newby who took advantage and managed to equalise, setting up an action packed second half. It looked like it was going to go to extra time until a great run and cross by Cara set up an easy tap in for our forwards. A great match and a great result. Well done girls! Now it's semi-final time. What's that growing on the field?Strange structures have appeared on the school field, as the staff and children planted some willow hideouts on the last day of the Spring Term. It was learning experience for everyone and by the end we were becoming experts in willow sculpture. We're now hoping for some rain and looking forward to seeing our shelters grow. Check back soon for updates. Silly Dress DiscoThankfully, the April Fool's Disco wasn't an April Fool and everyone had a chance for a good end of term dance. There were some interesting costumes including pink fairies, pyjamas, clowns and surfers - and that was just the teachers! Thanks to all the FoF Juniors for all their hard work in organising such a great evening and to Adam and Mark for their DJing skills. Wire Flower SculpturesSpring has arrived and with it comes the new flowers. Not Daffodils and Bluebells this year however, but wire flowers! Thank you to Mrs Westmoreland and Mrs Bosomworth for all their work in getting the flowers planted. Note: MS Powerpoint is required to run the presentation and you will need to click the 'READ ONLY' button when it asks for a password. Road SafetyDespite the rain and the cold, our year 3 children have been out and about on the streets around school learning some valuable road safety lessons. They stopped; they looked; they listened; they got wet! And they learnt how to stay safe on the road. Hot Dinner Olympic Winner! There was a surprise in store for one of our pupils last week when a special guest came for dinner. In fact Cameron was so delighted he's written his own article: North Yorkshire Champ Upon Us! Cameron, Class 5 pupil (Tutor Mr. J. Logue), won a competition hosted by North Yorkshire School Meals Association. Cameron won a Beijing Olympic shirt signed by Tom Daley (world champion diver). Cameron won it by asking Tom a question (what is it like being so high up?). People from all over the county entered and the best question won. It came down to Cameron! Cameron was shocked when he found out in front of everyone in the dinner hall - he couldn’t speak (for the first time ever). Well done Cameron and good luck in the future. By Cameron

Big thanks to Filey Lions for helping us with transport to and from Scarborough. Mr Drewell's Palaeontologist PupilsThere have been some exciting finds in Mr Drewell's class this week as the class go prehistoric and start looking at fossils. The children talked fossils, looked at fossils, played with fossils, made fossils by designing a clay mould and filling it with plaster and finally wrote a set of instructions for others to follow should they wish to make their own. Lots of smiles and happy faces were also discovered! The Cross Country TeamWell done to everyone who took part in the Scarborough & District Cross Country events this year. The final race was on Saturday 16th January at a very cold and very wet Scarborough College. Our runners braved the elements and brought home 4 trophies in all: Year 5 / 6 Girls Team (3rd place); Year 3 / 4 Boys Team (3rd place); and two individual 3rd places. Well done and a big thank you to Mr Mirfin, Mrs Mills and Mrs Bosomworth for getting cold and wet and helping to organise our team. Scrooge 2009What a wonderful production! The Year 5 & 6 children performed a version of a Christmas Carol to celebrate the festive season. And when Scrooge returned to his past to see himself in the Nativity, who should be there but our Year 3 & 4 children. This production involved everyone in the school and was a launch event for the newly formed Friends of Filey Junior School who managed to raise over £850 which will be spent on providing new curtains for the stage. Thank you to everyone - this was a magical event and one which will be remembered for a long time to come. |
